Dee Bostic’s Love, Lies & Lab Coats Vol. 2 continues from Vol. 1, further working out the relationships that bloomed in Vol. 1 while also planting new seeds for future relationships.

Now, as much as it would be delightfully wonderful to talk more about Vol. 2, this article is actually all about the physics of love and the gravitational pull of relationships.

THE PHYSICS OF LOVE

As a concept, love has mostly been relegated to the thinking minds of philosophy and the creative words of poetry. So, it might seem to be an odd and unlikely subject matter for the more precise language of physics.

Yet, that won’t stop us from attempting to do so through that lens.

Because, at its core, love is a powerful force. It’s a binding energy that draws matter–individuals–together, sustaining relationships in the abstract and the physical through the vast expanse of time.

While it’s impossible to quantify love with equations and measurements–we and countless others have definitely tried–exploring the underlying principles of physics can be a fascinating lens to understanding the dynamics and nature of human connection.

As gravity governs the orbits of planets and electromagnetism is in charge of the spinning of particles, maybe love is something fundamental too.

THE PULL OF GRAVITATIONAL FORCES

Love is a lot like a gravitational well. The further you walk into it, the greater its pull is upon you.

Attraction–love’s initial form–can be viewed as a form of potential energy. It can be something, anything, whatever the case may be. Just as objects with opposite charges are drawn to each other, so too are people attracted to those who are complementary, whether it be through personality, interests, or whatever.

This initial pull can be a quick spark, a momentary dip, or it can fuel itself into becoming much, much more. And like the attraction of one particle to another, romantic attraction is also dependent on many outside factors.

Thus, the intensity of this initial attraction, much like the strength of an electromagnetic field, can vary significantly between individuals.

KEEPING MOMENTUM & INERTIA

As a relationship deepens, momentum and inertia are developed. Thus, according to the physics of love, shared history and mutual dependencies create a resistance to change. As such, the more time passes, the stronger the love and the attached relationship can potentially become. Just as an object in motion tends to stay in motion, a strong, established relationship tends to persist, even when faced with external or internal forces that might otherwise lead to separation. This is because relationships grow the more they accumulate energy. Therefore, if one wants to break a relationship (and we don’t know why you would do that, but hypothetically), energy that is equal to or more than the energy kept by the relationship should be exerted.

The longer the relationship, the greater the inertia. This makes established bonds remarkably resilient.

THE RESONANCE & ENTANGLEMENT OF RELATIONSHIPS

Beyond the physical interactions between bodies, there often exists an intangible and invisible connection that deeply bonded individuals feel, akin to some form of resonance.

This is a profound feeling of subconscious understanding, where needs are automatically anticipated and emotions are quietly shared–all without an utterance. This is analogous to the sympathetic vibrations of objects tuned to the same frequency.

Here, we can mention the concept of quantum entanglement. Just as entangled particles remain linked regardless of distance, the emotional states and well-being of deeply connected individuals can be intrinsically linked, influencing each other even when physically apart.

CONNECTIONS BEYOND TIME

While the physical manifestations of a relationship may change over time, the impact and the echoes of love can resonate through generations. The lessons learned, the memories shared, and the values instilled within a loving bond can have a lasting influence, much like the conservation of energy in a closed system. Even when the physicality of love is lost, the energy of that love, transformed into memory and influence, persists almost forever.

While the physics of love may remain an elusive and largely metaphorical exploration, considering these fundamental principles offers a powerful framework for appreciating the enduring and profound nature of the connections that shape our lives.
